TRCompton Ceramic Art Clay The day to day ceramics on twitter

These are just a few more things that gave me ideas for potential pieces to make. Some of these are also ideas for a class I am offering at the art center about using ceramic in conjunction with metal and wood. Should be a great time.

Invitational

I just received an opportunity to take part in my first invitational show. This is very exciting for me and it couldn’t have come at a better time… What a week!

So I know this isn’t clay, but I have actually been using some of that artistic motive on other media lately. This some kind of card/memory box for some of our good friends wedding. They were going to pay an arm and a leg for one online, so I told them if they found a picture of what they wanted I would burn the image in for them. A $3.99 soldering iron later and this is what you get. I think it turned out pretty well. They want some color, and then I’ll finish it with oil or polyurethane, well see.

So, my wife and I decided to exchange our christmas ornaments at lunch today so that we could enjoy them for a bit longer (we go to my parents house for a few days around christmas) and this is the ornament SHE MADE FOR ME. Now, I am not normally a fan of the oven bake clay (Sculpey) because its a bit of a different ball game than I am used to working with, but my wife rocked this thing. I am floored. She did such an awesome job with it. I will also admit that mine was not as cool (made out of Crayola air dry clay and painted). Basically, mine looked like a 10 year old made it, and hers looks professional. Well done honey.

The Ball state clay guild has an annual chili bowl sale where we throw about 500-600 bowls and sell them off with a cup of chili for 7 dollars which is an amazing deal. Anyway these are 60 of my most recent bowls for that sale and some of the glazing techniques i was trying out on them… I’ll let you know how they come out of the firing.

5 min. Ceramics Blog. Jan 29th 2010

Back to Ceramics Blogging. Sorry i have been missing for so long. My classes started at Ball State three weeks ago and i am taking teaching classes. THis has meant more book work, less studio time, and no free time so far. I have managed to still get some work done and i am planning on uploading images of it sooner than later. I will be shooting slides on monday, so look for em. We did have a wood firing last weekend and i got a lot of great stuff out of it. A nice whiskey set, and a lot of nice tea bowls came out. They still need some final work done, but i am hoping i can enter them in some shows soon. Other than that i have managed to get another chain mail piece mostly done. It also was fired in that wood kiln. Basically at this point all i can say is i am workin hard and trying to get stuff done, so stay posted.

Lorna Meden

Lorna Meaden makes some amazing artwork but unfortunately her website isn’t the most amazing. Definitely check her out. Just googling her brings up a lot of stuff. She is an amazing person and seeing her work has greatly influenced my work.

Unica Home Furnishings

This amazing collection of kitch is actually where i go for ideas. I feel like looking at hundreds of benches or chairs in all the different styles posted here somehow help me to narrow down what i do and don’t like. I know it sounds lame, but i find it helps.

Julia Galloway

This artist is one of three who i was able to see work in person, and directly influenced much of the work in my senior show. She is an amazing artist and an extremely interesting person.

These non ceramics pieces are the kinds of things i am looking for to inspire my newer work. While i don’t particularly like them as they are I feel like I can simplify the ideas an develop a somewhat Neo-Rococo feel to my work.
